Remarkable  silent auction offers for vacation rentals, donations from local artists and craftspersons, merchants and professionals highlight the 28th Annual Maple Festival of the Middletown Springs Historical Society on Sunday, March 20 from 1-4 pm.

The event will feature a demonstration of early maple sugarmaking in a cast iron kettle over an open fire. Delicious maple desserts created by Society members, Vermont maple products and new 2016 syrup will be available for sale. Old-fashioned sugar on snow and maple cotton candy are always favorites.

Acoustic music and kids’ activities enliven the free afternoon event. Videos about Vermont maple sugaring will be shown continuously.

Silent auction opportunities include stays at vacation condominiums or B&Bs in Williamsburg, Va., Charleston, S.C. and Middletown Springs; lessons in horseback riding, oil painting, poetry and memoir writing; offers for genealogical, natural science and historic architecture research; as well as fine craft items and donations from area businesses. A well-known area artist is offering a life-like oil portrait of your pet. Open House Weekend 2016 @ Open House Weekend
Apr 2 – Apr 3 all-day

Visit Vermont sugarhouses and restaurants across the state and watch as maple syrup is being made. Join our family tradition and be a part of all the fun!

Maple Open House Weekend offers visitors an opportunity to see a variety of sugarhouses throughout Vermont in operation during sugaring season. This is the most exciting time of year for our sugarmakers and they are thrilled to open their doors and educate everyone on all things maple. Have you ever wondered how the sap from the trees gets to the sugarhouse and becomes the maple syrup you love? Do you know why maple is more nutrient dense than alternative sweeteners? Do you love maple and want to know how to incorporate it in more of your favorite recipes? Here is your opportunity to have all your questions answered by genuine Vermont sugarmakers. We encourage visitors to see as many sugarhouses as you can plan on your visit. They each offer a unique experience. Some of the planned activities for the weekend include:

  • Live fiddle music
  • Tours of the woods and sugarhouse
  • Horse-drawn wagon rides
  • Maple cocktail tasting
  • Samples of specialty products
  • Wood-fired Maple Pizza
  • Pancake and waffle breakfasts
  • Maple cream frosted donuts, maple cotton candy and sugar-on-snow
  • Lunch featuring maple recipes

Vermont Maple Festival, 50th Anniversary @ St. Albans, VT
Apr 22 – Apr 24 all-day

The Vermont Maple Festival is celebrating “Fifty Years of Golden Sweetness” on April 22, 23 and 24, 2016. Beginning with the first Franklin County Maple Festival in 1967, groups of volunteers have worked together each year to produce a joyous tribute to the Green Mountain State’s first specialty product – Maple, the Golden Sweetness that has been the hallmark of the mountains and valleys of this special place since the time when Native Peoples first tapped the trees. Because of its statewide significance, after a vote of the Legislature in 1973, Governor Thomas Salmon declared in an Official Proclamation that the name of the event be changed to the VERMONT MAPLE FESTIVAL.

All the usual delights of the Festival will happen at the 2016 50th anniversary event – Antiques, Crafts and Specialty Foods, Fiddlers, Comedy and Youth Talent Shows; the Exhibit Hall with Maple Syrup and Maple Cooking Contests, Maple Cream Frosted Doughnuts, Maple Creemees and other maple treats; Pancake Breakfasts; a Maple Dinner; Sugarhouse Tours; Kids’ Activities and Face Painting; the Sap Run foot race; Free Entertainment on the Main Street; a colorful Carnival; St. Albans Historic Museum; Maple Cotton Candy and more food treats from the Main Street vendors; Maple Beverage Tasting; Vermont’s renowned Sugar-on-Snow; the grand old Taylor Park with a carousel, a newly rebuilt fountain and places to picnic; a downtown of intriguing shops; the two hour parade with floats, bands and colorful costumed characters. But that’s not all – there will be some 50th anniversary surprises!

The Vermont Chamber of Commerce has named the Vermont Maple Festival a Top Ten Summer Event for 2016. With annual attendance estimated at upwards of 35,000, visitors eager to experience the “Flavor of Vermont” are attracted from all parts of the United States, Canada, and far-flung regions of the world. The Festival has been a frequent subject of the media: television features, including Food Network, national news and magazine articles, and has been highlighted in books including Amazing Festivals: Hundreds of Small Town Celebrations and 1000 Places in the U.S. and Canada to See Before You Die. Much of the Vermont Maple Festival is free of charge, and handicapped accessible. Tap into all there is to see and do at www.VTMapleFestival.org.

Vermont Maplerama 2016
Windham County, July 28 – 30
