Maple Conversations with Steve Hagenbuch
More Than Syrup: Supporting Biodiversity in Your Sugarbush
Global biodiversity loss is one of the greatest environmental issues of our time. As forest stewards, Vermont maple producers are well poised to address local biodiversity concerns. Join Audubon’s Steve Hagenbuch to explore sugarbush biodiversity, why it is important, and simple actions you can take to support it.
Featured Presenter: Steve Hagenbuch, Senior Forest Program Manager, Audubon Vermont, and National Lead for Audubon’s Bird-Friendly Maple Program.
Steve works with private landowners (including maple producers), municipalities, foresters, land managers, and other conservation partners to promote forest stewardship activities that will enhance the health and habitat value of forestland for priority bird species. A key component of his work is overseeing the continued development of the Bird-Friendly Maple program in Vermont and throughout the country. In addition to his work at Audubon, Steve serves on the boards of the VT Maple Sugar Makers Association and Waterbury Land Initiative. When not in the woods on business Steve can still be found there - hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, backcountry skiing, or whatever else seems like fun. Steve, his wife Dana, and their two teenage children live in Waterbury Center, VT where they run Sweet Bird Farm, a small farm business that includes maple production.
