Bird-Friendly Maple Habitat, Certified OrganicBusiness overview
Located in Johnson, Sterling Mountain Farm is a 242-acre working farm where maple, forest stewardship, and Vermont traditions come together. Managed by Rob Maynard and Deb Ravenelle, the farm has produced high-quality maple syrup for generations and is home to a certified organic, bird-friendly sugaring operation with 7,200 taps. Syrup is produced using a wood-fired evaporator, reflecting the farm’s commitment to traditional methods and sustainable practices.
Visitors are invited to experience this working landscape firsthand through private tours of the farm and sugarbush. Horse-drawn carriage rides travel into the woods, with the option to add a sugarhouse tour. Private walking tours also explore the sugarbush and include a visit to the sugarhouse, with the option to have the farm’s friendly golden retrievers join the adventure.
Along the way, guests learn about the maple-making process from tap to bottle, including the work that happens in the woods, sap collection, and the transformation of sap into pure Vermont maple syrup. Maple tours conclude with a tasting of three grades of syrup, giving visitors a chance to compare flavors and find a favorite.
In winter, Sterling Mountain Farm also offers private horse-drawn sleigh rides through the Vermont woods.
For Rob and Deb, the sugarbush is about much more than maple. Their passion for the forest, horses, dogs, and stewardship of the land is woven into each visit, offering guests an authentic opportunity to experience Vermont’s working landscape and maple traditions.
