What You’ll Need

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F degrees and line a baking dish or tray with parchment paper.
  2. For the Shortbread: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes). Mix in the maple syrup until well combined.
  3. Whisk together the flour and salt in a small bowl. Add flour mixture to the creamed butter mixture until just incorporated. Gently mix in walnuts.
  4. Transfer dough to the floured pan. Shape into a rectangle that is about 1" thick and cut into squares or rectangles.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden around the edges. Cool on a wire rack. Make the frosting while the shortbread is cooling.
  6. For the Frosting: In a large bowl, beat the butter with a stand or electric mixer until smooth. Slowly add the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time. Add the salt and maple syrup and continue to beat until smooth.
  7. Frost the cooled shortbread to your liking and enjoy!

Tips

  1. For a less sweet treat, you can skip the frosting and just eat the plain (and still decadent) shortbread.
